Oktoberfest was a great success this year. We went to the traditional "tapping of the golden keg" Friday night. It was at the new location Principal Park. The Oktoberfest got started around 4 Pm and continued until 11 Pm.The Stratford Rhythm Ramblers got off with the polka music around 6 Pm. We went back over to the Hessen Haus to watch and dance to Malek's band. Kathy and I where dancing a lot. We where dressed in our Bavarian outfits, Kathy with her Dirndl and I was wearing my Lederhosen & Hoot. We had so much fun dancing and talking to many people. A lot of people wanted their pictures taken with us. We also got several people interested in dancing to some of the songs. As Maleks got up to play we danced more. The concrete floor was a little hard to dance on but we managed. Friday night's crowd was good.

Saturday sure turned out to be a nice day. We got to the Oktoberfest grounds around 1 Pm. The polka club was getting ready to demo and give polka lessons to those interested. We started it off with a couple polkas then some waltzes. We had at least 8 to 10 couples come up and try their luck at dancing. After a little instruction they caught on real fast. As you can see from my pictures above I want to feature our new members Trish & Ed (4th row down 1st pic). They farm just north east of Des Moines. Ed told me that Trish has been wanting to do something like this for some time now. I told him about the polka club and how much fun we have dancing and meeting new people. They sure danced a lot Saturday afternoon.

As we went into the evening Malek's band got back up and started to play again. We all got an opportunity to meet the Remsen Girls. Five gals from Remsen Iowa were dressed in Bavarian maiden outfits and where promoting their Oktoberfest that will be on the 25th of October this year in Remsen, Iowa. They sure got life into the crowd with a real Bavarian atmosphere. There were many photo opportunities. Kathy and I got out on the dance area and danced a 4 person and 2-person schottische with the Remsen girls. Also a little later we involved the crowd with the Chicken Dance and The Hokey Pokey. The dancing crowd then grew to 60 people with everyone enjoying themselves. We sure danced a lot. We all had a lot of fun. I figured around 20 polka members showed up for the demo, a fair turn out. We will be looking forward in next year's Oktoberfest here in Des Moines.
