Nestled in the hills of Sherrill, Iowa, and located in the center of town is a 3-story rock
building dating back to 1856. This building is now converted into the Black Horse Inn. The Inn provides and specializes in German foods like Schnitzels and
Potato Dumplings. It caters to Anniversaries, Receptions, Showers, and Holiday Parties. They
have four comfortable suites for lodging.
This year Mark was the host to the first annual Black Horse Oktoberfest. I decided to make
the trip to Sherrill, Iowa, and attend this Oktoberfest. My friend Kathy could not be with me
since she had to be in Arizona. I arrived Friday night and picked up my mom and dad who live
in Dubuque. We drove up to Sherrill to the Black Horse Inn. They had a tent set up behind the
Inn and it was heated. We started off listening to the
pokariety band with Richie Yurkovich. They are
out of Willard, Wisconsin. The band sounded great with its Cleveland style accent. I did get a
few dances in with Mark's sister. I also got to talk to Jeff Walker who airs a Polka show called the
North woods Jamboree
The show is on Sunday evenings via the Internet. I am planning on listening to the show this
Sunday.
Saturday we headed back up to Sherrill, what a beautiful site. The leaves of autumn sure showed
their colors along the road to Sherrill. This time it was daylight and we had a good view of the
autumn leaves. We arrived at the Black Horse a little before six. This time
The Jim Busta Band was getting ready to play. I talked
a little with Jeff, Mollie, & Jim. The band got started. I danced a few songs with Jeff's wife
Genie. I also danced a few songs with a couple young gals that couldn't talk their husbands into dancing. They were willing to learn how to polka. I gave them a few quick lessons and we
started to dance. They picked up quickly.
As the band continued to play on they took
their first break and we had a treat. The Authentic
German Dance Group from Rockford,IL. got up on the floor and performed many German dance demo's.
They were real good at their performance and sure brought good entertainment to the crowd.
I figured around 150 people filled the tent. This
was a real good turn out for Mark. He is talking about having this event again next year.
I mentioned to him to get a hold of me so we can get it listed in the Iowa Polka newsletter.
It's sad to see events like Durant close up but the new ones like Black Horse will help carry
on. We all need to get out and support these events. As you can see from above I didn't
have my camera so Mark sent me 4 pictures
